The Tasmanian Government is funding 20 free filmmaking workshops through the Community Support Fund. These workshops are called the Future Film Makers Lab and will be held in Sheffield, Devonport, Ulverstone, and Wilmot.

What the Workshops Offer:

  • A two-part workshop series that introduces (Part 1 August, Part 2 November):

    • Story & Idea Development

    • Camera Angles

    • Lighting & Sound

  • You’ll get time between sessions to:

    • Start making your own short film

  • In the second session, you’ll receive:

    • Personalised feedback

    • Editing Tips

    • Mentorship

    • Expert guidance from a professional filmmakers

Who Can Join:

  • Anyone — no prior experience needed!

  • Just bring a device that can record video (like a phone, tablet, or digital camera).

  • Open to beginners and aspiring filmmakers.

Special Opportunity:

Participants are encouraged to submit a short film to the Weindorfer Film Festival, with a theme focused on:

  • Your connection to nature

  • Or Tasmania’s conservation legacy

The workshops are led by Holly Winter and Riley Sapsford, award-winning South Australian filmmakers and past winners of the Weindorfer Film Festival.

Bottom line: This is a great opportunity to learn filmmaking for free, get mentored, and possibly have your work shown at a festival — all while connecting with your environment.

The Weindorfer Association is accepting applications for their upcoming “Future Film Makers Lab” workshop series running in the last week August and November at locations across the North West of Tasmania.(Ulverstone,Devnport,Sheffield, and Wilmot)


Facilitated by award winning filmmakers Holly Winter and Riley Sapsford, successful applicants will gain valuable insight and experience as they share their knowledge throughout the two workshops.


Attendees are encouraged to enter their completed works in the Weindorfer Film Festival, which offers Prizes including a Weindorfer award, cash and accommodation.
